The Brief:
We knew we had a good idea. Our website was beginning to take shape and our products were looking impressive. We needed to make the connection between mother nature and our vision for EcoStraws.ie, and most importantly, we wanted to keep it local.
Limerick is a beautiful city sitting on the majestic river Shannon. Therefore it was to the banks of the Shannon we were drawn when we began our search for the perfect pics. The Curragower bar offered an excellent location where we could avail of a wide selection of drinks to showcase our reusable and biodegradable straws. With a backdrop of King John’s Castle and the river, and surrounded by hanging baskets in late bloom, we couldn’t have asked for a better location. A special mention to barman Brian Doyle who generously gave his time and attention to prepare the fabulous cocktails.
Next we took to the skies! (well almost 🙂 Thanks to the generosity of management in The Strand Hotel we were given access to the rooftop terrace. From here, we had uninterrupted views across Limerick city and county and could even pick out parts of Clare. With Thomond Park on our left and the impressive spire of St. John’s Cathedral ahead of us, we were getting some beautiful shots of EcoStraws. At the same time, we were time showcasing our home town.
The Wild Atlantic Way:
For our second location we decided to head to ‘Limerick by the sea’ aka Kilkee.
Kilkee is a popular seaside resort, located on the Wild Atlantic Way on the coast of County Clare. The scenery is breathtaking, from George’s Head around the horseshoe bay and out to the Diamond Rocks. We began our photoshoot half-way up the cliff walk. We edged our way out on our stomachs, determined to get the best shots of the powerful ocean pounding the coastline. The wind was swirling, the rain beating down and we were soaked to the skin but it was worth it to showcase EcoStraws against such a magnificent backdrop.
Getting Close To Nature:
On our way down from the cliff we took a little detour out to The Pollock Holes. The tide was receding so I knew it would be safe. With the 1st Pollock Hole offering little in the way of ocean backdrop I proposed we head out a bit further. I took off the shoes, I rolled up the jeans, and in I went to the icy waters! Safely across on the other side I looked back to see a sceptical Brian O’Callaghan grinning at me as if to say “you’re on your own buddy!”
With impeccable timing, the ocean decided to side with my colleague and the waters surged around us! I was now stranded and Mr. O’Callaghan was contemplating calling the coastguard! There was no other option but to dip my poor toes back in the icy brine & retreat to dry land.
My hypothermia wasn’t in vain however. We did manage to get some beautiful shots of EcoCups against the Diamond Rocks. Above all, we cannot forget the delicious coffee in The Diamond Rocks Café which warmed us for the next leg of our journey!
In early 2018 the #makekilkeeplasticfree movement was founded and this was another reason why we chose Kilkee as the perfect location for our photoshoot. With the rain pouring down and photos an impossibility we decided to head off in search of some evidence of the campaign. It didn’t take long! Located in the carpark near the diving club we found the Big Belly Bins. In just over 6 weeks, these segregated bins collected 23,165L of rubbish. 9, 993L of it was recycled and therefore diverted from landfill. What a fantastic result from Kilkee and the Clare County Council & hopefully a sign of better things to come.
Chasing Rainbows:
As the skies were darkening over Kilkee, we were searching for another location but both time & daylight were against us. We headed in the direction of Doonbeg and a most vibrant rainbow began to distract us. Naturally, we decided to follow it!
It led us to White Strand Beach, where we struck gold! White Strand Beach is in a designated Natural Heritage Area of ecological importance. It is also a S.A.C. (Special area of conservation). We could not have hoped for a more fitting end to our Wild Atlantic Adventure, nor could we have expected such magnificent shots.
The ultimate aim of EcoStraws.ie is to educate people about the harmful effect of single-use plastics. We also aim to provide a sustainable solution. The very fact that the beauty of the ocean could itself provide the incentive to change was proof that we were on the right track.
Having spent the day chasing rainbows, we were finally assured that we had found our crock of gold and it was full of biodegradable & reusable straws.
