EcoStraws Making Waves Across the Pond.

What an incredible few weeks it has been for EcoStraws. It is not everyday that a US University contacts you and asks for permission to display your products in their Materials Library. But that is exactly what has happened this week when the Anne and Jerome Fisher Fine Arts Library, part of the University of Pennsylvania on the East coast of the USA, got in touch.

The Fisher Fine Arts Library supports study, teaching and research in contemporary and historical aspects of art, architecture, city and regional planning, historic preservation, landscape architecture, studio art, and urban design. The Fisher Fine Arts Materials Library hosts thousands of samples ranging from traditional construction materials to emergent and novel samples such as electronic paint, and seaweed insulation. It is as much of a lab or studio as a library collection and displays are drawn from disciplines across campus, making it a diverse and unique resource.

Elizabeth Beck, curator of Fisher Fine Arts Materials Library stated: “We are collecting items like EcoStraws to make our students and patrons aware of the many options available  which promote sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to single use plastics. As our planet is inundated with debris that does not biodegrade we are destroying the habitat of all living creatures including humans. It is important for everyone to stop and consider their choices and realize that to pollute and destroy the earth is tantamount to destroying their own future as well as the future of every living thing. Hence the Material Library is collecting products like these Irish EcoStraws so that our patrons have the information they need to make better choices for themselves and for the planet.”

Brian O'Callaghan EcoStrawsBrian O’Callaghan, MD of EcoStraws in response stated “We are very proud to have products of ours exhibited at such an historic and well regarded University and library, and hope that it helps in some way towards influencing the student population in making the correct decision regarding the use of single use plastics. There are many ongoing campaigns around the world and we feel honoured that a university in the USA considered us to be a market leader in this regard.”

This of course follows on from a surprise package which arrived from the USA to EcoStraws HQ Christmas week. The parcel was from National Geographic HQ and contained 3 separate goodie bags of various plastic free goodies for each of the founders. But there was a note included, a note which reassured us, a note which showed us that we were being noticed, a note which proved that we were doing the right thing, a note which will undoubtedly be framed and hung for future reference when needed. The note read ….

 “To the EcoStraws Team,
Thank you so much for choosing to help save the planet in 2018. Much like Symphony for our World inspired you, you inspire us to keep pushing towards a planet in balance.
It’s people like you who change the world.
Cheers to a healthier planet in 2019 and beyond!

Limerick Post: Ciara joins the #GoGreenIn2019 team.

Primary school teacher, beef farmer and Irish women’s rugby captain Ciara Griffin has joined another team in a bid to rid the country of single use plastic.

For a woman with so much on her plate, you would hardly think that the UL Bohemian and Munster rugby star would have space in her schedule for extracurricular activity. However, the Kerry native has taken up an environmental challenge with Limerick firm EcoStraws and their #GoGreenIn2019 initiative.

The company provides eco-friendly, high quality, fun alternatives to the plastic drinking tube. EcoStraws.ie supply a complete range of eco-friendly reusable straws and 100% biodegradable disposable straws, as well as other associated products.

“As a farmer and a teacher, I have always had a keen interest in the environment. Education is key, and if I can help in any way, to ensure our natural environments and indeed livelihoods are protected for future generations, then I will.”

Impressed by the fledgling Limerick firm, Ciara said that she “bought into their vision very quickly.”

Based in Limerick, but trading nationally and internationally, EcoStraws managing director Brian O’Callaghan, said that there was admiration for Ciara through her “ambition, attitude and work ethic”.

A leader on the field, “now Ciara will act as a leader and role model off the field in helping us tackle environmental issues head on as we strive to #GoGreenIn2019”.
