The voice against the plastic straw is becoming ever stronger and many companies are now pledging to ‘Refuse the Straw’. In Ireland, we use over 1 million plastic straws every day. Nature can take over 500 years to break down this plastic. With landfills, and increasingly the marine environment accounting for more and more of this debris, we cannot continue to ignore this problem. That is why we are proud to offer you our biodegradable plastic straws or CPLA Straws here in Ireland.
Compostable PLA or CPLA Straws as an alternative hold a number of benefits. Biodegradable plastic straws or PLA stands for polylactic acid, and we make it from renewable resources, such as sugarcane or corn starch. Not only do we make biodegradable plastic Straws from renewable plant-based materials but they also require 68% fewer fossil fuel resources to produce than traditional plastic straws and are commercially compostable to boot. This makes them a more sustainable choice in comparison to their plastic counterparts. The material boasts an excellent balance of translucency, strength, toughness, and processability. They are also sturdy and hold well in drinks.
Furthermore, they look just like plastic straws and customers perceive them to be more hygienic as they are also a single-use item. All resources we use to make biodegradable plastic straws are 100% renewable. As a result, they are biodegradable and compostable, and break down in 12 weeks. After 6 months, nature will have composted 90% of the material.
We have designed biodegradable plastic straws for use only in cold beverages; we do not recommend them for use in hot beverages over 120 F. Because they can be composted with food waste, they are a convenient fit for fast-food chains and other restaurants.
CPLA straws are available in a range of colours and sizes.
