Three friends have launched EcoStraws after attending the National Geographic Symphony for our World performance in Limerick, where they came to the realisation of the damage humans are doing to our planet.
In a year that has seen Kilkee lead the way with a plastic free campaign that has sparked similar efforts in Miltown Malbay and Ennis, founder Brian O’Callaghan says the EcoStraw product will help reduce the needless use of damaging plastic.
Brian, brother to Shannon Heritage MD Niall O’Callaghan, set up EcoStraws.ie along with running buddies Anthony Egan and Sarah Keyes.
Based in Limerick, EcoStraws want to offer an eco-friendly, high quality, fun alternative to the plastic drinking tube. EcoStraws supply many different types of Eco-friendly reusable straws, and 100% biodegradable, disposable straws.
On Oct 25th, the European Parliament voted to ban single use plastics by 2021.
Research has shown that Ireland uses approximately 1 million plastic straws every day. Plastic drinking straws are recorded as being one of the top ten pieces of debris found on our beaches. These pieces get ingested by marine and land animals, and ultimately, by us.
EcoStraws have over 70 products listed on the website and are targeting both the domestic market and the trade market.
“Our stock of top quality, well priced, reusable eco-friendly straws include stainless steel, glass, bamboo and silicone are proving to be huge hits with the domestic market as householders include them in their cutlery drawer”, Brian states. “With all products priced under €10, they are also proving to be an excellent stocking filler for Christmas.”
A new Limerick company is distributing drinking straws to not only save the ocean but to also offer an extra treat to nibble on.

WHEN the National Geographic Symphony showcased the wonders of the animal and nature worlds on a big screen in Limerick, images of global pollution struck a discordant note with the audience. None more so than with three friends from Limerick whose shocked reaction to images of plastics in the sea and debris on the beaches prompted them to take action.

Three Limerick businesspeople launched EcoStraws, the first supplier of eco-friendly, reusable, and biodegradable straws in Ireland on November 12.
Brian O’Callaghan, Sarah Keyes and Anthony Egan attended the National Geographic Symphony for our World performance in Limerick in September, and they found the imagery so striking that they all came to the same conclusion: Earth is under assault from the actions of man, and something needs to be done. This is when the concept for EcoStraws came to life.
